Cultural & Historical Kep

The a coastal province of Kep in southern Cambodia is best known for its seafood and tropical islands. Kep city was founded as a seaside retreat for the French elite in 1908 and was a favoured haunt of Cambodian high-rollers during the 1960s. Over time, Kep became eclipsed by Sihanoukville and then deserted during the Khmer Rouge era.

Today, 30 years of civil war destroyed this little haven, there are still more than 200 abandoned modernist houses that give visitors a glimpse of how stylish Kep, and the rest of Cambodia was before the war.

Through its ups and downs, Kep has managed to maintain its quiet charm and authenticity and is now a favourite weekend and holiday destination with Cambodian families.

During this 3-hour excursion, which can be experienced in either the morning or afternoon, discoveries include the Crab Market and its little secrets, the ÔÇ£ghostÔÇØ houses and their strange atmospheres, Wat Samati for insight into Khmer Buddhism and more. The tour can be done in English or French at no extra charge.

Why we like this tour? Kep has a lot more to show visitors than many people think and this experience showcases a side of its history in a way that has never been done before. ÔÇô Coralie Romano, Siem Reap Branch Manager
