explore Phnom Penh through an architecture tour

For Cambodia, the late 1950s and 1960s was a period of dynamic cultural and political ambition which resulted in an extensive programme of building. The far-reaching cultural and social vision for Cambodia was reflected in the new architecture of the time which focused on integrating an international style highlighting local traditions, materials and climate.

To explore the capital cityÔÇÖs unique architecture, jump in a tuk tuk and let your expert guide (a Cambodian architect) explain the history of Phnom PenhÔÇÖs buildings. The tour features a selection of well-known buildings, including the National Library, the classic Raffles Hotel Le Royal and the deserted Railway Station, as well as some less obvious examples. Head for the former colonial quarter for a look at the gorgeous French colonial-era buildings that have been restored near the Post Office, such as VanÔÇÖs Restaurant, and to see the locations used in the film ÔÇ£City of GhostsÔÇØ. Make your way past the Vann Molyvann-designed Chaktomuk Conference Hall, originally opened in 1961, and now regularly used as a theatre venue for special events, before finishing the architectural tour of the city at the renovated art deco-styled Central Market.
