Markets and Thai Community Lifestyle Full-Day Tour

Share

Set off in the early morning and drive to a railway station to board the non-air-conditioned 3rd class carriage. Lean back and enjoy the 20-minute scenic journey along salt and rice paddies to the famous Mae Klong railway market where the stalls spill out on both sides of the railway tracks. When the train comes through, the tents and goods are moved from the rails at lightning speed. After the train has passed by, everything is moved back so quickly no one would suspect this was a passage for a train.

After exploring the market, continue to a local enterprise that produces palm sugar made from the sweet watery sap that drips from cut palm flower buds. The sap is collected each morning and boiled in huge woks until a sticky sugar remains.

Next embark on a longtail boat and ride through small side canals into the Mae Klong River, passing traditional style houses on both banks and plenty of palm trees. Disembark and transfer to the famous Damnoen Saduak floating market ÔÇô this is the floating market seen in most Bangkok postcards but the tour visits parts where there is still an authentic charm.

Khao lam, sticky rice in a bamboo tube, is not easily found at the local market in Bangkok, but itÔÇÖs a very popular snack in rural provinces. During a visit to a local open-air khao lam producer, learn how this famous Thai sweet is made and satisfy your taste buds with a freshly made sample.

For todayÔÇÖs lunch, your guide will take you to the ÔÇ£Baan Bang NoiÔÇØ homestay and introduce you to some of the essential herbs, spices and vegetables used in Thai cooking. Once acquainted with the ingredients for your lunch, you can roll up your sleeves and help to prepare and cook the different dishes. Converse in the relaxing surroundings as you take a rest and enjoy the meal you have prepared. After satisfying your hunger, explore the surrounding orchards on foot or, by bicycle. Enjoy some fresh fruits (depending on season) straight from the tree then return to your hotel in Bangkok.
